Decades teaching creative advertising and leading creative teams

Jim Bosiljevac

Howdy!
I’m an advertising creative director, copywriter and teacher, with 25+ years in the advertising industry.

I’ve worked for agencies, on client-side creative teams and freelance.
I’ve produced ad campaigns for global brands, local brands, start-ups and nonprofits, across film, print, digital, out-of-home, digital, social, events, experiential and tattoos.

My work as a creative, the work of my team, my work as a client, and the work of my students has been recognized at industry award shows like Cannes, One Show, D&AD, Clios, NY Festivals, London International Advertising Awards, AICP, Addys, Obies, Effies, Radio Mercury Awards and others.

I'm a full-time professor in the Texas Creative portfolio sequence at the University of Texas, Austin. I also teach classes on integrated campaigns and creative thinking. Throughout my career, I've taught over 40 sections of students, at UT and graduate portfolio programs like Miami Ad School and Chicago Portfolio School—classes in portfolio development, scriptwriting, storytelling, creative concepting, branding and creative media.

As a creative professional, I've held leadership positions both client-side and agency-side. At Yahoo, I was the Head of Brand Creative for over 7 years, leading a team of 60+ creative professionals — designers, writers, art directors, animators, editors, producers, strategists, coders, photographers and more. I also managed our partner ad agencies, working closely with their creative teams to produce work on our behalf.

Prior to Yahoo, I worked for 16 years at global ad agencies DDB and Leo Burnett, producing work on large brands like Clorox, McDonald's, Coca-Cola and Heinz, down to work for start-ups and non-profits.

I currently freelance and do creative consulting and speaking on creative storytelling, culture and operations. Reach out if you want to chat.

I've taught hundreds of students how about the creative process and how to develop a set of tools and frameworks that work for them. I’ve spent much of my life trying to foster the right environment for creativity with my professional teams and in the classroom. I’ve taught students how to go from just hoping for inspiration, to following a process that leads to strategic, attention-snagging, effective creative ideas.

Anyone can harness the power of creativity. You don’t have to be in a creative field or a particularly creative person. Creative problem solving is about the process, about the right mindset, and about honing the right skills.

I grew up wanting to be a writer. I was a curious kid. I liked to make things, sometimes take them apart to see how they worked. I’ve spent my career putting ideas together and taking them apart again. Then putting them back together in a new way. I hope to teach this to as many people as I can.
